ABOUT JACQUELINE COLLEY
Chilly’s: What was the inspiration behind your bottles?
Jacqueline Colley: This illustration was inspired by a trip to Wildwood NJ which is a living museum of mid century American architecture with quirky architectural motels and neon signs from the 50’s and 60’s I’m very inspired by visual styles from the past.
C: Can you tell us a bit about your typical creative process?
JC: I often start by looking through my photos and sketches and making a moodboard and colour palette, then I sketch and play around with ideas and components; I like to dream up fun things like the Pineapple bar featured in this design! I then draw everything in colour which is my favourite bit, before scanning and finalising the layout and repeating pattern in Photoshop!
C: Could you tell us a little about your background and how you ended up doing what you do? Is this your dream job or was it an unexpected turn of events?
JC: I studied graphic design (because I thought I’d get a job in that, but I didn’t!) however I did get a graduate role as a textile designer and spent several years learning in that profession before I decided that freelance was the life for me! My work then slowly transitioned into illustration as that was a better fit for me with more opportunities and different ways to express yourself; for example window painting, to social media squares to Art prints. I love the variation and that I can roll with the changes. Lockdown has had me focused on new things like Papier-Mâché sculptures and that is fun. It’s definitely my dream job as I get to indulge in my creativity and make excellent colourful things all put together in my imagined world. :D
C: What’s been a highlight of your career so far?
JC: It’s always a highlight for me that I can make a living from making art! Since leaving full time work I’m always amazed that I’ve survived on my ideas and drawings, I’m so grateful for that! I feel very lucky to have worked with brilliant people and lovely clients.
C: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to any aspiring creatives?
JC: Keep going, I had no clear idea where I was was going which is probably why I’ve bobbed about a bit! But I see every project and experience, as a brick building up a house of knowledge, for me it’s taken and is taking time and that’s ok, it’s a process and I like to embrace that and keep learning and trying new things!
